Finding a Therapist in San Marcos, CA
Finding a therapist in San Marcos CA was a little simpler 10 years ago when I started my private practice. From 2014 to 2023, the population of San Marcos has grown by 30%. I'm noticing the increased number of therapists in the area as well. This is great for providing you more options, but also overwhelming seeing a long list of therapists in front of you and several pages to look through. Especially if it's your first time seeking therapy.
I want to help you find a therapist in San Marcos and make it a less overwhelming task.
STEP 1:
Before you search, can you name what you're experiencing? Anxiety, PTSD, Depression, Marital Issues?
STEP 2:
This is not a necessary step but can be helpful in narrowing your search from the start. Research what type of therapy is known to be effective based on what you want to focus on. For example, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) is known to help with anxiety or depression. Exposure Response Therapy (or ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). EMDR Therapy for Anxiety, Depression, PTSD and other forms of trauma. This information will help filter therapists who have a specialty for your specific need.
STEP 3:
Determine if you want to go through your insurance or pay out of pocket. Talking with your insurance provider and understanding your benefits for mental health services can help you determine this decision. A side note, if you're eligible to go out of your network, such as a PPO plan, you have more options of therapists to choose from.
Questions to ask your insurance provider:
- 1. Does my plan cover Mental Health Services?
- 2. Are there a limited number of sessions I'm allotted?
- 3. Do I need to have a mental health diagnosis, and if so, are there any diagnoses that are not covered under my insurance?
- 4. Is a Superbill accepted under my plan? If so, what percentage of the therapist's fee will I be reimbursed? What information is needed on the Superbill?
STEP 4:
Begin your search. There are several ways to complete this step.
1. Ask your family, friends, co-workers, or faith community if they recommend anyone. Your doctor, naturopath doctor, or psychiatrist. Even your acupuncturist or Yoga teacher may have referrals on hand. I have a few client's that were referred to me by their hairstylist. Finally, college, university, or children's school counselors often have a referral list on hand. They're also a little more educated on types of therapy approaches that are best for a specific mental health diagnosis.
2. Therapy directories. Here a few popular ones:
b. Good Therapy
c. TherapyDen
These directories have filters to help narrow your search by location, specialites, insurance, and/or cost. Also demographics if you're specifically looking for a male or female therapist, LGBTQ+, specific religious or spiritual beliefs that match yours, if they work with a specific age population, and more.
